A day in the life of an Aussie translator
5:30-6:00am: Rise and shine. You may think this is a little early,
especially for someone that works from home and doesn’t have
to commute to work, but I prefer to wake up early and get in a
little exercise to kick-start my day. I normally run 5-6kms or go
for an early surf in the mornings. This helps me to focus on my
work and ensures I get a good night’s sleep.
7:30-8:00am: Brekky. In the warmer months I like to sit on the
veranda and have my breakfast which is normally cereal or toast,
some freshly squeezed fruit juice and a cup of coffee, my caffeine
boost for the day!
8:30am: Start work. Because I work from home and don't have
to commute I like to start work early while my motivation is high
and before lethargy sets in. I normally work from 8:30 through to
12-12:30 when my stomach starts rumbling for lunch.
12-12:30pm: Lunch. I nearly always have lunch at home which
normally results in a healthier option and is also inexpensive. The
majority of people that work in an office go out and buy their
lunch so I guess I save approx $10 a day eating at home.
Sometimes there is not much to choose from, but I make up for
this on the weekends when I tend to eat out more often. Most of
the time I will eat my lunch and get straight back to work as I find
that if I sit back and relax I get sleepy so I like to keep things going.
12:30-1:00pm: Back to work. Concentrating on work after lunch
can sometimes be a struggle but a good strong cup of coffee
normally sees me through to 6:00. Unless I have a tight deadline
to make, I will normally close up shop at 6:00 or soon after.
Where possible I like to separate my work and private life and
finishing at 6:00pm allows me to spend time with my wife, help
her to prepare dinner, relax with a beer (or two) after work and
ensures that I get a fresh start the following day.
6:00-9:30pm: Kick-back time. After work I like to relax with a
beer and watch some TV or a DVD with my wife. Although you
probably think it a little early, I am normally in bed by 9:30-10:00
pm. I know what you are thinking… That I sound like an old man!!
But I believe that keeping a healthy lifestyle is important and have
found that getting to bed early and rising early works best for me
and helps me perform at my peak.
